Laptop RAM modules illustrating DDR4 memory upgrade choices

Adding RAM can be one of the simplest ways to improve multitasking on a compatible laptop. However, memory upgrades should be based on the laptop's actual specifications rather than capacity alone.

What is DDR4 laptop RAM?

DDR4 is a generation of system memory. Laptop memory commonly uses a smaller SO-DIMM form factor, so desktop DIMMs should not be purchased for a laptop simply because they are also DDR4.

How much RAM do you need?

8GB can suit basic browsing and documents. For heavier multitasking, many users benefit from 16GB. Professional workloads may require more.

Check the laptop before ordering

Confirm memory type, supported maximum capacity, number of slots and whether some memory is soldered to the motherboard.

Match compatible specifications

Check DDR generation, form factor, supported speed and capacity. Compatible modules can also help dual-channel operation where supported.

Should you replace or add RAM?

If there is an empty slot, adding a compatible module may be possible. If all slots are occupied, replace an existing module with higher-capacity memory.

RAM is not a substitute for an SSD

RAM and storage solve different problems. More RAM helps when the system runs short of memory, while an SSD improves storage access and responsiveness.

After the upgrade

Restart the laptop and verify installed memory in Windows. If performance remains poor, the bottleneck may be the processor, storage or software.
