A laptop battery naturally loses capacity as it ages, but everyday settings and usage habits can make a noticeable difference to runtime. If your Windows laptop is running out of charge faster than expected, start with simple checks before buying a replacement battery.

1. Check which apps are using power

Open Windows Task Manager and review apps using significant CPU or memory resources. A browser with many tabs, video calls, cloud-sync software and background utilities can increase power consumption.

2. Lower screen brightness

The display is one of the easiest places to reduce power use. Use a comfortable brightness level and enable automatic brightness or battery-saving options where supported.

3. Use Windows power-saving features

Windows provides battery and power settings that can reduce background activity when you are away from a charger. Configure power mode to match the work you are doing.

4. Reduce unnecessary startup and background apps

Disable unnecessary startup programs and close applications you no longer need.

5. Keep Windows and drivers updated

Updates can include reliability and power-management improvements. Install updates from Windows Update and use manufacturer-supported drivers.

6. Manage browser tabs

Many active tabs, video pages and web applications can consume considerable resources. Close tabs you do not need.

7. Avoid unnecessary heat

Use the laptop on a hard, ventilated surface. Excessive heat can affect performance and battery life.

8. Use battery saver when you need extra runtime

When travelling or working away from a charger, enable Windows battery-saving features before the battery becomes critically low.

9. Check battery health

Windows can generate a battery report showing design capacity and current full-charge capacity. A large decline can indicate normal battery aging.

10. Know when replacement makes sense

If the battery has lost substantial capacity, shuts down unexpectedly or cannot provide enough runtime, a compatible replacement battery may be more practical than changing software settings.
